Was the 2019 Super Bowl Show A Style Flop? Here’s Our Verdict.

Whether you’re an avid watcher of the game or not, the annual costume reveals from the Super Bowl halftime show is always a key date in our calendar.

Over the years, the knockout performances during the critically acclaimed halftime gig have continuously captivated global press and sent Twitter spiralling into a meltdown.

Wow-factor displays from the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Madonna and Beyonce in recent years have catapulted the international sports event into a fashion frenzied media storm.

Last year, Justin Timberlake hit the headlines for his camouflage themed collab with Stella McCartney, which seemed to split people down the middle as to whether this was an inspired hit or a firm miss.

This year, it’s Maroon 5’s turn to take the spotlight. Although the poor pop-rockers have been subject to a scathing public, dissecting the style choices from this year’s much-anticipated show – and they haven’t been forgiving…

There have been the good, the bad and the downright hilarious in terms of costume choices over the decades (Phil Collins in 2001 and Travis Tritt in the 90s anyone?).

And while Maroon 5’s outfits not quite on the same controversy scale as Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake (remember nipplegate of the early noughties?), they probably won’t be going down in style icon history like Michael Jackon’s military get-up of 1993 either.

A Style Flop?

Leadman Adam Levine took the brunt of the social media slating for his slightly bizarre version of a slow strip-tease, as he gradually de-robed down to his bare tattooed chest.

He started off well in a simple black peacoat and to be honest, we’d rather he’d had kept that on…

Next up was the sport-inspired Dries Van Noten zip-up jacket which again was fine if not a little immemorable, but the grand reveal of his last layer really gave the hungry critics a feast.

The headliner’s ‘piece de resistance’ turned out to be a skintight, brown, geometric tank top, reminiscent of something your grandad might’ve worn in the 60s.

And of course, the internet exploded in response.

Comparisons to living room interiors were made:

And many wondered whether he was about to start his own collection:

Unfortunately, it didn’t end there, as the poor guy then whipped said tank top off to unveil a pair of the painfully-cool Supreme boxers peeping over the top of his jeans.

And unluckily for Levine, those hard-to-please internet critics felt that sadly, the Maroon 5 frontman was just not street enough to pull them off…

He did regain things a little though, by flashing his lavish Rolex Rainbow Daytona watch- reportedly one of the scarcest and most sought-after watch varieties out there.

Other Controversy

Outkast’s Big Boi made a pretty poor choice by choosing to rock up, draped in a full-length fur coat, sparking an outcry from PETA and other animal rights groups across the globe.

The rapper, actor and producer committed a major faux pas with that one, attracting swathes of criticism from media outlets and rightfully so.

Rapper and producer Travis Scott fared a lot better in the style stakes pulling together a super bowl-worthy look, firmly placing himself in the ‘Best Dressed’ category (in our eyes anyway).

The artist won himself street-cred with a customised varsity jacket, to commemorate his performance, emblazoning his name and AKA rapper title Cactus Jack across the front.

He teamed these up with a pair of 1017 ALYX 9SM FW19 leather trousers by Matthew Williams, layering an ALYX x Nike collab long sleeve top and leather vest underneath.

On top of this, he took the opportunity to show off a pair of not-yet-released khaki ‘Cactus Jack’ Air Jordan 6 trainers.

And finished off the look with an impressive Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton belt, in what was a not-so-subtle nod to the lyrics in his ‘Sicko Mode’ track.

The Verdict

So it seems there were some big hitters and some very big misses from this year’s event. So maybe the Super Bowl 2019 Half Time Show should be considered a flop in terms of style.

With controversy never too far away from the sporting showdown, it will be intriguing to see who will be headlining next year.

But one thing’s for sure, Adam Levine will be steering clear of the tank tops from now on…
