Costume designer Barbara Mastroianni, daughter of one of Italy’s most respected performers Marcello Mastroianni, has died at the age of 66.
Barbara Mastroianni died in Rome after a long battle with lung cancer.
Born on Dec. 2, 1951, Barbara Mastroianni was the daughter of Marcello and his first wife, Flora Carabella.
Following in her fathers footsteps, Mastroianni’s love for theatre and film saw her follow a career as a costume designer in Europe.
Throughout her career she worked with directors including Mauro Bolognini (The Inheritance), Ettore Scola (The Night in Varennes), and Federico Fellini (And the Ship Sails On).
Barbara Mastroianni was known as being quite shy. She rarely spoke of her farther who was best known for staring in films such as La Dolce Vita.
The funeral was attended by Italian singer Renato Zero and Gianpio Sarracco, the mayor of Fontana Liri and took place on Saturday (13/10/2018) in Rome.
Mastroianni was married to Giorgio Bertocci Fontana who had died a few years previously. Barbara Mastroianni’s sister actress Chiara Mastroianni had been close to Barbara, remaining with her at her bedside until the end.
