Catherine Zuber wins Best Costume Design for The King & I at Olivier Awards 2019

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Catherine Zuber won Best Costume Design for her incredible work on The King and I at the Olivier Awards 2019.

The glamorous event celebrating all things theatre is over for another year, which means a whole host of actors, creatives and production teams will be making space for their well-deserved trophies.

The prestigious ceremony – which is in its 43rd year – took place once again at the atmospheric Royal Albert Hall, London and was hosted by Manchester-born comedian Jason Manford.

It’s always a tough call when it comes to the costume design award, with fierce competition between the nominations and this year was no different.

However, it was the extremely talented Catherine Zuber who bagged the prize this year for her impeccable designs on the Rodgers and Hammerstein 2018 revival of the classic show.

Fly Davis for Caroline, Or Change at Playhouse Theatre, Anna Fleischle for Home, I’m Darling at National Theatre – Dorfman and Duke of York’s Theatre and Gabriella Slade for Six at Arts Theatre were also all up for the sought after gong.

But it was Catherine’s visual artistry on one of everyone’s best-loved musicals which earned her the award.

From stunning golden pointed headpieces to billowing ballgowns, Catherine’s designs on this epic tale of old Siam certainly packs a punch.

Prizes for outstanding design work also went to Bunny Christie for Best Set Design on Company, Gareth Owen for Best Sound Design on Come From Away and Jon Clark for Best Lighting Design on The Inheritance.

The Inheritance did very well all round, coming away with prizes for American Airlines Best New Play, Kyle Soller for Best Actor and Stephen Daldry for the Sir Peter Hall Best Director award.

Moving new musical based on events following the September 11 attacks, Come From Away also won Mastercard Best New Musical, Outstanding Achievement in Music, with acknowledgements going to David Hein and Irene Sankoff for the book, music and lyrics, Ian Eisendrath for Music Supervisor and Arrangements, August Eriksmoen for Orchestrations, Alan Berry for Musical Director/UK Music Supervisor and the band and Best Theatre Choreographer going to Kelly Devine.
